Matcha Latte and Green Tea Oats

Day 17 (wow can’t believe it!!) of Welcome to Wellness and today we focus on Green Tea.

Green tea is the healthiest beverage on the planet (or, maybe second behind Prosexxy?!). I drink at least one cup every day, and shock horror, my husband has now become obsessed with it. He notices he feels more alert after a cup (his fave is Clearspring Matcha Green Tea Blend in case you are wondering!!) and also has a slight loss of appetite – leading to two of the benefits to drinking this tea! Green Tea also:

  1. contains less caffeine than coffee, but enough to produce an effect. It also contains the amino acid L-theanine, which can work with caffeine to improve brain function.
  2. Increases Fat Burning and Improves Physical Performance. Several studies show that green tea leads to decreases in body fat, especially in the abdominal area
  3. loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body. It helps to arm your body against cancer and heart disease, and may even stave off dementia
  4. Rich in polyphenols, it also protects the skin from the ageing effects of the sun!

PLUS – it has zero fat, zero sugar, zero calories – so is a really smart way to start your day! Whilst still giving you that little buzz from the caffeine (about 25 milligrams per cup vs a whopping 150 milligrams in a Latte!)

Matcha Latte

In my quest for coffee alternatives that give me a more natural high, I have come across Matcha Powder. Matcha is finely ground green tea leaf powder, traditionally used as part of the tea ceremony and by Buddhist monks prior to long hours of meditation. The most prized of all Japanese teas, it is valued for its concentrated flavour and vibrant green colour. I use it almost daily, sometimes a teaspoon in smoothies, or if I’m craving something lovely, hot and creamy at work, it’s a Matcha Latte, blended with coconut milk, cinnamon and coconut sugar. HEAVEN!!

I also tried to think of a slightly more alternative way to get my green tea in! So have soaked some oats, chia seeds, cinnamon, sliced apple and honey overnight in a jar with a green tea bag, hot water and a dash of almond milk. It’s looking good already and will be hopefully lovely and creamy and dreamy tomorrow!
