Magnesium for a Balanced Mind and Balanced Body

Magnesium is a Macro-mineral needed by the body in large amounts (like calcium and sodium), to help the body regulate over 325 enzymes and plays an important role in organizing many bodily functions, like muscle control, electrical impulses, energy production and the elimination of harmful toxins.

Low Magnesium levels can affect the stomach, your digestive tract, your ability to sleep, and your mood, making you feel emotional, and not yourself.

Unfortunately most of us are deficient in magnesium due to our modern diet that is often high in fat, sugar and salt – this works to speed up the depletion of magnesium from our bodies. If you are an athlete or sweat a lot (BIKRAM YOGIS!!!!), you may also deplete easily, and your magnesium needs may be higher. This can lead to heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, joint pain, digestive illness, stress-related illnesses, chronic fatigue and a number of other illnesses!

Did you know that chocolate cravings are potentially a sign of a magnesium deficiency, since chocolate is high in magnesium??

Magnesium is also often referred to as the “Relaxation Mineral” because of its ability to promote relaxation and help the body adapt to stress, which may be helpful if a stomach ache is due to emotional upset. It is the main medicine for depression, sleep disturbances and emotionally disturbed behaviour because of its strong positive effect in calming and nourishing the nervous system.

Depression and other emotional disorders of the heart are addressed most directly with magnesium. There is a definite link between how we feel and the condition of our cells. If we think of our cells as a tiny version of our whole self, then it makes sense that less than healthy cells will affect every part of us! A Healthy Cell is one that is open and permeable, leaving us feeling happy, energetic and optimistic. An Unhealthy Cell is one that has become rigid (from insufficient magnesium) closed off and toxic, which can lead us to feel depressed with low energy and in a low mood. The condition of our cells will affect us physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

How to get more Magnesium!

Start with an Epsom Salt Bath!

Epsom salts Are Magnesium! Magnesium is not easily absorbed through the digestive tract; it IS however absorbed well through the skin! Studies show increased magnesium levels from soaking in a bath enriched with Epsom salt. Dissolve 1.5KG of Epsom salts in a warm (warm as you can handle) hot bath and soak in it for 20 – 30 minutes. This will firstly draw out impurities through your skin, and then once this has happened your body will draw IN the magnesium. This will help to restore your levels initially.

Then do an Epsom Salt Flush (the next day)

This needs to be done on a reasonably empty stomach at least 4 hours without food – first thing in the morning works best, and do this when you plan to be at home for a morning.

Ingredients:

  • a small glass of water
  • 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts
  • 2 litres more water

Directions:

  • Thoroughly mix the Epsom salts in the glass of water (they are highly soluble and should dissolve easily, using warm water may help dissolve the crystals faster – do this the night before so they are ready to drink when you wake up)
  • Drink this solution as quickly as you can – the taste is not pleasant, some people find that drinking it through a straw prevents tasting it altogether.
  • Then drink 1½ to 2 litres of water or as much as you can immediately. You can have juices which help replace the taste if that helps.
  • Usually you will find that the effects are noticeable within a short time – your bowel contents feel like they have become liquefied and can’t wait to be squirted out.
    You will need to stay near a toilet to avoid consternation.
    The process should be complete in less than 2 hours.

And then continue with regular Epsom salt baths – at least once per week.

You can help prevent a magnesium deficiency by making sure that you meet the RDA through your diet. Men need 420 milligrams of magnesium daily, while women require 320 milligrams. You can also try to increase the Magnesium rich foods you include in your diet:

I also use this oil spray before bed, it has lavender in it which is also fantastic for relaxation!

If you are feeling low in mood, emotional, with stomach pains you can also try the following (alongside upping your Magnesium levels):

1) Stay Hydrated

Keeping your body and your bowels well hydrated will help regulate your bowel movements.

Here is how to calculate how much water you should drink a day for both health and weight loss benefits – please note that if you sweat excessively like ME this will be the minimum you should drink!!

  1. Your weight: The first step to knowing how much water to drink everyday is to know your weight. The amount of water a person should drink varies on their weight, which makes sense because the more someone weighs the more water they need to drink. A two hundred pound man and 100 pound woman require different amounts of water every day.
  2. Multiply by 2/3: Next you want to multiple your weight by 2/3 (or 67%) to determine how much water to drink daily. For example, if you weighed 175 pounds you would multiple that by 2/3 and learn you should be drinking about 117 ounces of water every day.
  3. Activity Level: Finally you will want to adjust that number based on how often you work out, since you are expelling water when you sweat. You should add 12 ounces of water to your daily total for every 30 minutes that you work out. So if you work out for 45 minutes daily, you would add 18 ounces of water to your daily intake.

2) Probiotics

According to Harvard Health Publications, researchers at King’s College in London reviewed 14 well-constructed studies and found that probiotics reduced “‘gut transit time’ by 12.4 hours, increased the number of weekly bowel movements by 1.3, and helped soften stools, making them easier to pass.” Several studies have also found probiotics to be helpful for infectious diarrhoea / antibiotic associated diarrhoea, and some studies related to IBS have concluded it is helpful for reducing gas and bloating. The best one is Symprove, available from Health Food Shops and online!

3) Heal your emotions and flow of energy

In Yoga we talk about 7 Chakras which are the energy centres in our body that energy flows through.
Blocked energy in our 7 Chakras can often lead to illness so it’s important to keep this energy flowing freely. If you are feeling emotional and feeling it in the belly, your Third Chakra could be blocked. It is located in the solar plexus- between the bottom of the breastbone and the navel and its organs are those involved in all actions of digestion and excretion.
